CYPRUS WINES / DRINKS

Cyprus is considered Wine’s Fatherland, the black graves the oldest in the world. The wine is made without any additives. You simply store the juice, then its own, it turns into wine.

Cyprus has a thriving wine trade mostly around the Limassol area and produces some very good wines which are available at most supermarkets and all restaurants.

No visitor should leave Cyprus without trying the most famous of all wines, Commandaria. This is a dessert wine named after the Commandarias (village estates) administered by the Knights Hospitaller from Kolossi Castle

Coffee

As well as instant coffee, Cyprus is well known for its specialized Greek and Turkish coffee, readily available any time of the day or night in Cafes or Taverns. Such coffee is always taken black, never with cream or milk and is usually accompanied by a glass of water. You can order it in the following ways:

Commandaria – sweet and rich red dessert wine

Ouzo – refreshing aniseed flavoured Aperitif

Zivania – strong firewater made from distilling the leftovers of the grape crushings

Brandy – Five Kings is the better known brandy

Filfar – Liqueur tasting similar to Grand Marnier complements any meal

Brandy Sour – heavy fruity often served welcome-cocktail

Brandy Sour

Ingredients: Angostura, Brandy, Lemon squash, Soda Water, Slice of Lemon

A few drops of Angostura in a tall glass, a measure of Brandy, a measure of Lemon Squash or Juice and fill up the glass with Soda Water. Stir gently with spoon and decorate with a slice of Lemon and a cherry.
